Why big cats need different boxes
Most automatic litter boxes are designed for cats between 5 and 14 lbs, which is the median weight range for adult domestic cats. Big cats (Maine Coons, Ragdolls, Bengals, Norwegian Forest Cats, and the larger breeds) sit at or above the top of that range, and four design choices shift to accommodate them.
Interior turning radius
A 15 lb cat needs noticeably more interior volume than a 9 lb cat to turn around comfortably inside the drum. Cramped drums force big cats to back into the box or twist awkwardly to exit, which leads to refused boxes and inappropriate elimination. Aim for at least 76L of interior volume for cats over 15 lbs.
Entry height for older big cats
Maine Coons live 13 to 17 years on average, and the largest cats often develop hip and knee issues by their senior years. An entry height over 8 inches is hard for a 15 year old, 20 lb cat with arthritis. The PETKIT PuraMax 2 has the lowest entry sill on the premium market and is the right pick for senior big cats. The Litter-Robot ramp accessory ($49 one time) helps for the Litter-Robot 4.
Sensor weight thresholds
Premium safety sensors are calibrated to detect cats reliably between 5 and 30 lbs depending on brand. Cheap rake-style boxes (under $200) often have lower upper limits and may trigger false safety stops for cats over 14 lbs, which means the cleaning cycle never completes. Always check the manufacturer's published weight range before buying for a big cat. For more on sensor reliability, see our safety guide.
Drum durability under heavy use
A 20 lb cat puts roughly twice the load on the drum mechanism that a 10 lb cat does. Cheap motors fail faster under the additional weight. The premium tier all uses brushless motors rated for heavy use, but cheaper units in the category visibly suffer with big cats. Large breeds like Maine Coons, Ragdolls, and Bengals have different needs than smaller cats across nearly every category, from food portions to grooming frequency, so for broader big-cat care guidance, Katoopia is a useful starting point.
